KETO DIET; DIETICIAN’S PERSPECTIVE

Today’s post is on a much talked about version of diet ie “KETO DIET” . I am going to tell you the views of some renowned dietitian on the topic “KETO FOR WEIGHT LOSS” .


Let me tell you first, what keto diet is all about??

The ketogenic diet ( keto diet) is a very low-carb, high-fat diet.It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fat. The reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain.


Ketogenic diets can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has numerous health benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.


Ketogenic diet is used by many dieticians across the world,for weight loss purpose too, but there are mixed reactions from dieticians of India on it’s use for weight loss. Here are views of some dieticians from different places from Indian sub continent.


A famous keto dietician from Pune Ms Archana Rairikar says “we should not promote Keto Diet(KD)as Weight loss Diet though we can use KD to accelerate Weight loss in between for short period.”


According to Ms Vinita jaiswal(clinical and certified sports nutritionist, certified critical care nutritionist running her Own clinic in indore)says “Yes, I have seen the results of very low carb diet for wt loss. Keto diet is wrongly said by people for weight loss, keto diet is used in epilepsy.”


Registered dietician Dr Preeti Shukla(Consultant Dietitian,Nutri Needs Health Consultancy,Indore) is in favour of using KD for weight loss. She says “Keto diets are largely followed and it actually produces ketones in urine. The area is vast and perfect calculation of macros and micros needs to be done before starting with diet. I have personally seen wonderful results of keto diets and I do believe its a future of weight loss. The period and expert monitoring is key to a successful keto diet plan for weight loss.” She adds “Its basically for hard core gym people. Not for a sedentary person.”


Ms Poorva Vashistha Kaul, Nutritionist, says “What I learned was that dietician needs​ to be trained under qualified professionals, then only they understand this well for diabetic patients children and epileptic patients for per gram measurements.

Dr Vinita Mewada, Chief dietician & HoD Dietetics Department Bansal Hospital Bhopal, says ” Ketogenic diets are extremely effective for lowering insulin levels, especially for people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.” On Keto for weight loss she replies “No single diet is suitable for everyone, especially since individual metabolism, genes, body types, lifestyles, taste buds and personal preferences differ.”

Ms.Snigdha Sharma Shukla, Consultant Dietician,UAE believes “keto can also be used for weight loss among people’s who are less physically active.” She says “I did tried it with my colleague and she and her husband lost 5 to 7kgs respectively in a time of 15-25 days,I later tried it with my clients in weight loss program with successful results. It also improved insulin sensitivity in my clients case


Here is another dietician from Burhanpur who is against keto for weight loss. Ms Maya Jhanwar says “Keto diet gives the results but it’s not sustainable, so cannot be continued for a long time.” She asks “When u again resume to normal diet then ??” She adds “When we are getting good results with balance diet, why to go for strict ke
Clinical dietician and certified sports nutritionist from Bhopal Ms Rashmi shriwastava who practically works on keto diet says “Yes keto diet is successful both in epilepsy and wt loss Even it is beneficial in autistic cases also having recurrent seizures.But it shud be carefully monitored.”


A free lancer nutritionist from Bhopal Ms Nidhi Shukla Pandey has her own views she says “Apart from Keto being scientific and all.. I feel everyone has their personal opinion when it comes to guiding their own clients.. I personally never believe in Keto.. What my experience has taught me I follow that.. Apart from that there are quite few other things that I tried on myself.. Keto is a strict no for me and my clients.. And I have lost my weight the normal.. Boring way in 2.5 years. Diet +exercise.”


RD Pooja Lakhani, Clinical Dietitian, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, says “We have a dedicated ketogenic diet clinic here at Apollo hospital. It is meant for epilepsy and has recently been utilised in few other neurological abnormalities.For weight loss, people simply go low carb.. only carb source are non-absorbable fibers.Classical keto requires tedious calculation and monitoring.For weight thats not been practiced.”


“Low carb and low fat diet is better than keto diet. Bcz keto diet can’t be continued for long time while low carb low fat diet can be used for long time. And as I have observed patients are also satisfied with low fat low carb Diet” says Ms.Preeti Pateria, dietitian “Harmony”, A centre of excellence for Diabetes, thyroid, obesity, infertility, Bhopal.


“Keto diet is definitely known to give visible results in a short span. It may be extensively used for weight loss in the future. But the challenge is to use it smartly with inclusion of good fats and avoiding saturated fats and trans fat and best be done under the supervision of a qualified Dietitian.” Says Nutritionist Kamna Desai, Trophic Wellness Pvt.
